Toronto – The Presidents of Enterprising Organizations (PEO), Toronto’s pre-eminent leadership and performance services organization, has launched the second installment of its ‘Knowledge project to share the collective wisdom of present and past members with the Toronto-area business community.
“PEO’s insights into executive performance are expanding each day,” said Leon Goren, CA, PEO’s president and CEO. “We now possess a living storehouse of knowledge. The insights we are now disseminating are a community asset that will benefit leadership in many sectors.”
The first knowledge accelerators featured Paolo Maccario, the COO of Silfab Ontario, a major producer of solar energy panels, who described a career, which has taken him from Italy to Mexico to Tennessee (and a Duke University MBA) to Toronto.
This newest series, comprising 10 blogs and a four-part interview, detail the life, career and insights of Laurie Tugman, former CEO of Marsulex Inc. Tugman rose from a relatively junior Suncor Inc. financial employee in Fort McMurray, Alberta, to controller at Tricil in Ontario, where he first took on an operational position as a general manager. He moved up to CFO at Dynatec and at Marsulex, rising to CEO. He speaks about his involvement with the board and systems, consolidating staff and making the business grow instead of selling it. At the same time, he cautions future CEOs, especially those involved with private equity, as he was. “The feeling was that I was capable of getting them to a transaction or to an exit,” Tugman revealed in his Knowledge Accelerator talk. “The private equity owners are always going to exit the business and I think they saw me, given my background, as someone who was really there to provide that exit. I wasn’t given a mandate to grow the business but I took it back to the board that I felt that there was an opportunity to do more with the company. Rather than being a short-term CEO for an exit, I ended up holding the office for close to seven years and the company became substantially larger.”
“Laurie Tugman’s insights are must reading,” Goren added. “Especially for CFOs and other financial executives seeking to move into an operational role, or becoming CEO, as Tugman accomplished.”
PEO works with Boards, Chief Executives and company Presidents, business owners, senior executives and emerging leaders to develop and/or refine growth trajectories. We also assess the challenges and opportunities that can delay or accelerate the journey, and then work with leaders and their teams to enable them to arrive at their destination, on time, on budget.
Our secret formula is simple. We believe that leadership growth needs organization growth and networks to provoke, accelerate and sustain their growth. By accessing PEO’s full suite of performance and leadership accelerators, coupled with the right performance advisor / coach and the right peers, organizations will get to success faster and in a more sustained way.
