The Mayor's Race: And He's Off
The Globe and Mail, Peter Cheney, October 25, 2008

The Dark Horse

Meet Rocco Rossi. He's never been elected to anything. Yet, in Toronto's political backrooms people are asking: Could he be the right guy to take on David Miller? As Peter Cheney found, Mr. Rossi isn't playing it coy. If he finds support, he'll run.

The making of a politician is part calculation and part witchcraft - kingmakers work their speed dials, the force of money and influence boil and stir, and a candidate moves toward his date with destiny.

And so it was the Rocco Rossi stood outside the University of Toronto's Convocation Hall and schmoozed an A-list crowd that had gathered to honour the late Dr. Sheela Basrur. Mr. Rossi was hard to miss, a giant figure with a shaved cranium, the build of circus strongman, and a high-wattage smile that has been described as "the most amazing in Canadian public life" by no less than Michael Ignatieff.

ROBYN YOUNG FOR METRO CANADA, October 20, 2008 05:35

Gaurav Jain is only 23 and already vice-president of business development for a cutting-edge mobile solutions company.

How did he get to be so successful at such a young age?

Jain and his classmate Kunal Gupta hatched the idea of Polar Mobile last year while still cramming for exams and completing work placements at the University of Waterloo.

The idea became a reality in February when Canada’s largest publisher — Rogers Publishing Limited — bought in to Smart Solution, an application they built that delivers content to consumers who use mobile devices such as the Blackberry and Apple’s iPhone.

There's nothing 'soft' about the non-profit sector
Rocco Rossi, chief executive officer of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario
May 19, 2008

In the past 100 days or so, at least seven people have been saved using defibrillators and training that we have helped fund in Ontario arenas and recreation centres. Being able to directly link actions we have taken to lives saved is the greatest job satisfaction I have experienced in my entire life. Working with passionate colleagues who are driven first by a cause and not by a commission is a tremendous pleasure.

Those experiences and many more like them are available to all who enter the not-for-profit (NFP) sector. More and more executives are making the leap.

Some, however, are held back because they have bought into one or all of three myths about moving to the sector. I want to examine and respond to all three in the hope that more of you will consider joining me.

By Lana Winkler in Women's Post
November 9, 2007

“I never dreamed I'd get into finance”, she said with a grin. Tall and light, with the honey-blonde kind of beauty one would expect from an actress, Heather Gomes, the current CFO of Virgin Mobile, does not fit any preconceived ideas of what a finance professional should look like. “I never really enjoyed math and sciences when I was in school”she said – “I was more into art and the humanities, but I liked the challenge of finance, so that's what I took.”
